Fried Calamari

What is your favorite finger food? Fried calamari is one of my all-time favorites to nibble on during a game or movie night! So easy to make, so so yummy to eat. Only one caveat! I prefer not to clean it myself because it grosses me out. I do not like to see all the organs, the quill and that black mush. Ew! Of course if you want to/have to clean it yourself no biggie!

This recipe is really good; you won`t end up with mushy or plastic like calamaris. Follow the instructions and rings will be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside! It is a promise!

Fried Calamari (Squid)

Ingredients

3-4 calamari, cleaned and sliced into rings
2 tea spoons salt
1 small bottle mineral water (20 cl)
1 tea spoon baking soda
1 tea spoon sugar
2-3 drops lemon juice

For frying:

Vegetable oil
1 cup flour
salt
black pepper

Instructions:

1- Combine salt and 1/4 of the mineral water and rub calamari rings with this mixture for 10 minutes. Then rinse.
2- Combine rest of the mineral water, baking soda, sugar and lemon in a bowl. Rub this mixture to the rings for another 10 minutes.
3- Put the entire bowl into the freezer for 1-2 hours.
4- When you are ready to fry rinse the calamari rings with lukewarm water. It might look like all frozen but with a brief rinse they are good to go.
4- Combine flour, salt and black pepper. Coat the rings with the mixture. Deep fry for only 2-4 minutes.

Tartar Sauce:

Like all other seafood, of course calamari is perfect to serve with tartar sauce. It seems there is a billion versions out there; but basic ingredients are as follows. The second list is for optional ingredients.

Basic Ingredients:

Mayonnaise
Garlic
Salt

Optional:

Walnut
Dill
Pickles
Lemon or limes
